Editorial

Dear member,
it's August again, the month before the busiest one for our association. In September, or soon after it (we're still defining the details), we will host the next meeting and with it the renewal of the board. Candidates are slack: be bold and enter your bid at this page, which is empty at the time I am writing this. Do think: Wikimedia Italia needs your help!

Next year will be full of new challenges and goals to achieve:

• We will get help from a secretary, who should start to work with us in late September
• In October the third edition of the Festival of Liberty Digital, coordinated by Luca Chemello and Marco Menini, will take place (if you candidated to organize an event, this is the time to start working out: October is just around the corner!)
• In November the new fundraising campaign will start (and it's time to submit a plan of activities to WMF, think of the communication and the banners to put on your sites ..)
• Between December and January the new Wikiguida will be published (dedicated to this time to Wikiquotye): Christian Biasco will need to discuss with the Wikiquoters in order to understand how to set it, and as always he will ask for a hand once he will write the script down
• In Autumn students in Lombardy will compete in rounds of Wikipedia entries to participate in the 2012 Wikimedia Prix Italy

... and many other activities and initiatives. If you think this list is not exhaustive, tell us what is missing!

Now I leave you to read this new issue of the newsletter of the association, which comes after a long period (again, we need a hand. Are you the right person for Wikimedia News? Tell us!) and is full of information on the activities of recent months.

What happened during last months

January 2011

• Here there is the report for the three events organized for the ten years of Wikipedia.

Milano

Wikimedia Italy tried for once to come out and invite the internet scene in Milan to its party, with some success given the turnout. It was not a formal meeting, but just an opportunity to celebrate our magnificent 10 years of work: we managed to meet some Wikipedians, and Wwikimedians, with some professionals of the Internet.

Maybe we should organize social events like this more often, in the hope that the distance, and often the lack of understanding among those working in the wiki-world and the society diminishes.

Roma

Rome held two distinct events: a trip to the Imperial Forum, organized and conducted by MM (here the report, in Italian), and the celebrations of the joint Public Domain Day and the tenth anniversary of Wikipedia, organized by Marco Calvo at the Library Nardi (here the report, in Italian).

Vicenza

The celebration of the tenth anniversary was held in Vicenza in the gallery of a shopping mall, among housewives busy to shop, teenagers with their cell phone looking at us with curiosity and a clown to entertain children to play... because Wikipedia is only 10 years old and a future-oriented project. We cut the wiki-cake with a live connection with Jimbo Wales, who found our choice curious: but he understood the fact that Wikipedia is for the Wikipedians, but also for passers-by, who open a page, read it and then leave. This is why we wanted to celebrate with them. We have also been contacted in video by other groups Wikimedians (especially Eastern European) who wanted to say hello and share this celebration which took place "at the same time" or so in over 400 locations around the world.

February 2011

• February 26, Vicenza - public meeting on "Wikipedia and didactics", part of the wiki-meeting in that day - Report by Marcok

Our initial idea (of Marcok and Lcm and who organized the day) was to provide, within a wikimeeting in preparation for the Festival of Digital Freedoms in October, a public meeting with students in the auditorium of a nearby high school. Eventually we decided to focus directly on teachers, who after all need more than their students to "update" and discuss the use of new tools for knowledge. Elisa Spadavecchia, teacher and member of the LUG, generously offered to assist us: Elisa is an expert in the use of wikis in teaching and described a number of relevant experience in the short time available. A researcher of the Kessler Foundation in Trento, Asta Zelenkauskaite, also came to present an interesting academic study conducted on the relationships between users from talk pages of an edition of "minor" Wikipedia as the Venetian one. The participation of the teachers was not high, but everyone seemed very informed and enthusiastic, probably more competent than we had expected, which allowed us to learn something. All this took place in a beautiful space kindly provided by St. Paul Cultural Center, who hosted us for lunch too. The photos can be found on Commons.

March 2011

• assemblea in Bologna - Report by CristianCantoro

The meeting was held in Palazzo Re Enzo at Piazza del Nettuno in Bologna in collaboration with APTservizi, the transport company of Emilia Romagna, and the Tourism Department of the region Emilia Romagna (TER). The meeting was opened at 10.00 and saw the presentation of the project "Adopt a word" (by TER, see the overview of the project on the TER blog). In addition to presenting the project, Frieda made ​​a presentation on Wikipedia, the experiences of some users who worked on the project have been told, and a call for "auction" was made to adopt new terms. This concluded the first part of the assembly.

In the afternoon the results of some projects implemented by WMI in the first half of the year were presenred: the new WikiGuida on Wikisource made ​​by Christian Biasco, the short "Merde", sponsored by us and made ​​by the International School of Comics (in collaboration with the Association "Gente di Cartoonia" and "Tunué"), the first project of its kind in Italy released under a Creative Commons license; Mehdi Tekaya then presented his blog InsideTunisia, a report on Tunisia after Ben Ali.

The actual meeting started at 14:30; we approved 2010 final balance and 2011 provisional budget, with the opportunity to discuss and reflect on respect of completed projects and those to be implemented. The debate was intense and as tradition the meeting ended abruptly at 18:00, because of the closure of the premises. The day ended with the also traditional social dinner.

• March 23, Zanè (Vicenza): conference of members Marcok and Xaura on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects in "Modern Times", series of conferences organized by the cultural association Gigizeta. Report by Marcok and Xaura

It is not true that only in large cities there is life and cultural sensitivity: in fact the county is full of interesting and often well done initiatives, like this cycle of conferences organized by a group of young people in Zanè (VI) with support of the City Council. We thought it was a good idea to accept their proposal to make a presentation to explain what the "wiki" world has become in a few years out of (seemingly) nowhere, invariably speaking of the most successful and ​​"popular" project, Wikipedia, and how it works, but also of other Wikimedian projects.

• March 24, Sesto San Giovanni: Kiado held two presentations of Wikipedia to about 10 eighth-grade classes, in the cycle "Extra School" by Young People's Library, at the auditorium of the City School of Music Donizetti. - Report by Kiado

I made ​​a presentation of general Wikipedia and Wikimedia Italia to ten eighth grade classes (over two hundred students) of the town of Sesto San Giovanni. The presentation was derived from one of the many one already made and let available by Wikimedia Italia. To support it, I distributed to their teachers copies of "Welcome to Wikipedia" and, for students, postcards with comics released under Creative Commons.

The background of the conference is based on the "how" to use Wikipedia for school projects, for example, focusing on the fact that it is a new("When I was in school there wasn't") and now it is possible to use it as an excellent starting point for school projects, but prople should not try and consider Wikipedia the culmination of their research, because it is a tool, useful, easy, fast, but with many limitations its users should be aware of. So: start your search at Wikipedia, and then go to more specific texts, articles, (or even other encyclopedias), maybe availale on Wikisource or in areference library, either public or personal. In this way not only you will perform a better search, but you can also improve the encyclopedia.

This thing surprised not a little the teachers, who were expecting (some of them confessed to me) a hagiographic presentation of the encyclopedia, an almost exaggerated ode, while I wanted to stress on its defects, trying also to instill the desire to improve it by adding or updating information.

At the end of the presentations I showed the WikiGuida of Wikipedia, which is very well made and summed up very well in about 7 minutes what I have tried for over an hour to explain. Both students and teacher were interested, much more than I hoped for.

We should be able to work again with then in the school year 2011/12.

April 2011

• April 5 and 12, Milan: Seminar about Wikipedia for teaching, in collaboration with Milano Lingue, held by Cristian Consonni and Roberto Didoni. CristianCantoro reports:

The seminar spanned on two afternoons, for about 7 hours in total.

The first afternoon (Tuesday, April 5) program has been more "theoretical" and with a more general approach, with an initial brainstorming for testing the knowledge about Wikipedia: the boys (but also the teachers) were well informed; they all use Wikipedia and, surprisingly, many knew also about the free license. Some already also tried to edit articles. During the meeting some videos have been projected ("Source verification and neutral point of view", the WikiGiude about Wikipedia and the WikiGuide about Commons), appreciated by the audience.

On the second afternoon (Tuesday, April 12) the session has been more interactive and "practical". Teachers did an excellent job, as the students came that afternoon with some texts ready: some of the have been published in real time, giving the opportunity to explain "live" how Wikipedia works. We revised several articles, talked about redirects, deletions, and templates; we saw what interwikis are and how they are included. We also uploaded on Commons a photo of di Claudio Baglioni, kindly offered by a girl student.

• 9 aprile, Torino: presentazione del cortometraggio Merde all'interno di Torino Comics, report di Senpai:

L'evento è andato decisamente bene. Siamo riusciti a fare due presentazioni del filmato al posto di una ed in entrambi i casi abbiamo avuto un buon riscontro da parte del pubblico.

Alla presentazione ufficiale (quella di domenica alle 14.00) la sala era quasi piena ed il pubblico era molto interessato. Il video è stato addirittura proiettato due volte - in apertura e in chiusura presentazione - e non sono mancate domande sia sulla produzione del cartone sia sulle licenze creative commons delle licenze; in particolare l'immancabile "ma voi che ci guadagnate" non si è fatto assolutamente attendere.

Il bilancio della trasferta Torinese, quindi, è stato assolutamente positivo: l'idea è piaciuta ed il corto pure, in più il fatto di presentare le licenze creative commons affiancate ad un prodotto che piace ed interessa, è certamente più semplice che farlo in modo asettico e teorico.

Sono rimasti piacevolmente colpiti anche i due titolari di una piccola casa editrice di manga, che hanno preso i nostri contatti e che probabilmente ci contatteranno per saperne di più.

• 15 aprile, Fiuggi: siamo ospiti alla Deepcon 12 (convention di fantascienza e fantastico) con un intervento dal titolo "Don’t panic: Verso la Guida Galattica - Wikipedia". - Report di Marcok

Essere invitati a una convention di fantascienza non capita tutti i giorni, specie se è per parlare di... Wikipedia e dell'Enciclopedia Galattica! Né Marcok né Gvf (noti appassionati di science fiction) sono riusciti a resistere all'occasione e si sono recati a Fiuggi, dove da diversi anni si tiene la Deepcon, manifestazione fino all'anno scorso svolta in abbinata alla Italcon, quest'anno con qualche appassionato in meno, ma non meno accanito. Wikipedia è stata immaginata dagli organizzatori che ci hanno chiamato come una possibile, anzi probabile "antenata" dell'Enciclopedia Galattica, una gigantesca opera descritta nei romanzi del Ciclo della Fondazione di Isaac Asimov, o forse come la nonna della "Guida Galattica per Autostoppisti" immaginata nei romanzi umoristici di Douglas Adams. In realtà Wikipedia assomiglia assai di più alla scanzonata "Guida Galattica" che alla seriosa "Enciclopedia Galattica". I nostro soci Marcok e Gvf si sono dunque inseriti in una divertita per quanto colta dissertazione - durata tutto il pomeriggio di un venerdì - su queste due (immaginarie) enciclopedie, e su quella vera, la "nostra", cercando di spiegare ad una piccola platea i meccanismi di funzionamento di Wikipedia. Cosa non facile, perché in fondo Wikipedia è un po' come la tecnologia fantascientifica degli "smorzatori inerziali" di Star Trek: si sa che funziona bene... ma di preciso non si sa come! Il tutto andando a ripescare fatti (poco noti ai più) della storia delle prime enciclopedie online, introducendoli con numerose citazioni dai romanzi di Asimov e di Adams. Possiamo dire che è stato un pomeriggio molto piacevole per tutti. Tra i relatori anche il nostro Marco Calvo che ha parlato di Liber Liber. Per qualche dettaglio in più, vi rimandiamo all'intervista realizzata da una blogger che ha partecipato all'evento.

• 30 aprile, Schio (VI): siamo all'Ubuntu Party con una presentazione dal titolo Wikipedia e il crowdsourcing. - Report di Marcok

Inserire Wikipedia all'interno di un contesto più ampio - quello appunto del crowdsourcing - è stata la sfida in questa presentazione svolta a Schio in occasione dell'Ubuntu Party, manifestazione ospitata da amici ormai di lunga data, quelli che animano la locale Piazza Telematica in collaborazione con il Comune. Marcok ha cercato di parlare (per come ha potuto, cioè in forma divulgativa) di "intelligenza della folla" e contenuti generati dagli utenti, passando per Wikimedia Commons e altri wiki. Per chi proprio non potesse farne a meno, ecco il video integrale.

May 2011

• 13-15 maggio, Berlino: Hackathon 2011, meeting di Wiki Loves Monument. Report di Aubrey

Wiki Loves Monument è un concorso fotografico europeo e federato, che si svolgerà a Settembre 2011, organizzato dai vari chapter a livello nazionale, con un secondo round europeo, in cui concorreranno le 10 migliori foto di ogni nazione. le foto degli utenti, legate ciascuna ad un monumento, saranno rilasciate con licenza libera CC-BY-SA e verranno caricate su Wikimedia Commons e successivamente Wikipedia. Il concorso punta infatti a creare un database di immagini libere riguardanti il patrimonio artistico europeo, in modo che possa essere utilizzato in tutti i progetti Wikimedia.

L'Italia a causa di problemi legati alla legge sui Beni Culturali non potrà partecipare.

Storia di WLM

Il progetto è nato nel 2007 in Olanda, con un concorso fotografico sui mulini a vento. E' andato talmente bene che hanno provato a fare un concorso simile con monumenti storici ed artistici, ed ha avuto un grosso successo.

Quest'anno si è deciso di rendere il concorso europeo (e federato per nazione).

• 23 maggio, Imola: Frieda Brioschi (Presidente di Wikimedia Italia) partecipa a Open Generation: l’identità della nuova generazione organizzato dalla CNA Emilia-Romagna. Report di Frieda.

L'incontro era dedicato ai giovani imprenditori e il tema era l'open coniugato in tutte le forme interessanti per l'impresa (open innovation, open economy, open information e open & free net). Il panel a cui ho partecipato vedeva come relatori Tito Boeri (docente della Bocconi), Raimondo Iemma (ricercatore della Fondazione Rosselli), Riccardo Luna (all'epoca ancora direttore di Wired) e Stefano Costa (coordinatore del gruppo per gli Open Data nell'archeologia presso la Open Knowledge Foundation). June 2011

• 7 giugno, Padova: intervento al Festival della Comunicazione dal titolo "Condividiamo la conoscenza? Il caso Wikipedia", presso il Centro culturale S. Gaetano, ore 18.30. - Report di Marcok

Il Festival della Comunicazione è una importante manifestazione (con oltre 60 eventi diversi) tenutasi a Padova, nata in concomitanza con la giornata delle Comunicazioni sociali, sostenuta dal Comune di Padova e dalla diocesi. Sacro e profano si sono dunque incrociati e anche i soci Marco Chemello e Luca Menini hanno svolto due interventi di taglio divulgativo, rispettivamente su Wikipedia e sul software libero, illustrando come questi due temi siano strettamente legati. È stato approfondito il concetto di "affidabilità" in relazione all'enciclopedia libera, un tema certo complesso, non facile da spiegare ma che riscuote sempre notevole interesse da parte di tutti. Prima dei loro interventi i nostri soci sono stati diffusamente intervistati dall'emittente locale Tele Chiara all'interno di una lunga diretta televisiva nella centralissima piazza Cavour. È disponibile il video dell'intervista (dal minuto 28.06).

• 8 giugno, Catania: Triquetra ha tenuto un seminario su Wikimedia Italia, Wikipedia e progetti fratelli presso il Dipartimento di matematica ed informatica dell’università di Catania qui la relazione per esteso.
• 14 giugno, Milano: incontro alla Fabbrica del vapore con le istituzioni coinvolte nel progetto "Share your knowledge"; Marco Chemello ha tenuto un incontro di formazione sull'uso di Wikipedia. - Report di Marcok

L'incontro si inserisce in un innovativo percorso di formazione rivolto ad enti e istituzioni culturali non profit, all'interno dell'iniziativa "Share your knowledge" organizzata dalla Fondazione lettera27 in collaborazione con vari partner tra cui Wikimedia Italia. Si tratta di un progetto pilota di notevole interesse e rilevanza, finalizzato alla diffusione dei saperi e del patrimonio degli enti culturali attraverso l'uso consapevole della licenza CC BY-SA e di Wikipedia. Questa iniziativa si svolge all'interno di WikiAfrica con la direzione scientifica di Iolanda Pensa e si collega strettamente al Progetto GLAM, da poco inaugurato anche sulla Wikipedia in italiano per incoraggiare i contributi delle istituzioni culturali ai progetti Wikimedia. La prima parte del pomeriggio - svoltosi presso il centro di documentazione DOCVA del Careof - è stata dedicata da Marco Chemello a spiegare quali sono gli approcci più corretti da adottare nel contribuire all'enciclopedia libera. La seconda parte dell'incontro si è svolta come workshop, in cui i delegati degli enti coinvolti sperimentavano direttamente la modifica dei contenuti su Wikipedia, grazie alla presenza di una nutrita schiera di wikipediani, admin e soci wikimediani che si sono cortesemente prestati come "tutor". Un grazie speciale a ChristianCantoro, .mau., Mizardellorsa, Nemo, Remulazz! I rappresentanti delle istituzioni culturali - esperti nei loro settori che spesso affrontavano per la prima volta di persona l'editing delle voci - sono stati coinvolti rispondendo con altrettanto interesse ed entusiasmo e questo sicuramente fornirà un contributo positivo per la riuscita del progetto, che è destinato a essere riproposto nel 2012. La giornata si è conclusa con una "happy hour" a cui erano invitati tutti i wikipediani che avevano partecipato alla maratona per scrivere nuove voci con i primi contenuti concessi dagli enti.

• 23 giugno, Roma: Frieda Brioschi ha partecipato al convegno «I nuovissimi media: i giovani e la professione che cambia» organizzato in Campidoglio. - Report di Frieda

Il convegno era organizzato dalla Fondazione Cutuli e dalla Fondazione RCS e faceva parte di un ciclo di tre convegni in memoria di Maria Grazia Cutuli, indirizzati a giornalisti. Moderati da Massimo Gaggi (corrispondente da NY del Corriere della Sera), sono intervenuti - a parte la sottoscritta - Gianni Riotta, Luca De Biase, Carlo Formenti, Giuseppe Smorto, Riccardo Luna, Alessandro Ferrara. È stato un momento di riflessione e confronto sugli ormai vecchi nuovi media, sul citizen journalism, sulla reputazione e l'anonimato in rete.

July 2011

• 8 luglio, Siena: Frieda Brioschi (Presidente di Wikimedia Italia) parteciperà ad un incontro presso la Summer School di Fondazione Fortes. Report di Frieda

L'incontro in sé è stato piuttosto rapido e mi ha permesso di raccontare un paio di cose su Wikipedia, spiegare il nostro mondo (com'è strutturato l'universo Wikimedia) e rispondere a qualche domanda di un pubblico molto attento. Era molto interessante il contesto in cui mi sono trovata: la Summer School era dedicata a dirigenti di associazioni, fondazioni, ecc. del terzo settore.

• 16-17 luglio, Abbadia S.S. - Cartoon Village 2011. Report di Senpai

Il Cartoon Village (giunto alla sua 4° edizione) è sostanzialmente una classica fiera del fumetto che - però - ha in realtà ben poco di classico. Si svolge nella piazza principale di un paese e non nei soliti asettici capannoni da fiera, e la distanza fra i "Vip" ed il pubblico è del tutto inesistente, tanto che passeggiando fra gli stand si incontrano i medesimi volti che poco prima parlavano dal palco principale dell'evento.

La nostra partecipazione era affiancata a quella del Comics camper, un0iniziativa dell'Associazione Arte Invisibile che ha creato una vera e propria libreria itinerante contenente esclusivamente fumetti. Durante i giorni di fiera i fumettisti che partecipavano all'evento hanno trascorso diverse ore presso il comics camper (e quindi presso il nostro stand) realizzando vignette e illustrazioni che sono state poi rilasciate con licenza libera.

I disegni sono in fase di upload sul portale fumetti presente su biblioteca.

Oltre a questo la collaborazione con Gente di Cartoonia va avanti, la loro iniziativa "Vignette sul Ring" (che vedrà la finale il prossima settembre a Diamante) verrà ospitata sulle pagine del progetto fumetti, infatti tutte le vignette prodotte dai vari artisti durante la gara, verranno rilasciate con licenza libera e poi caricate sul portale.

The Spokesperson's Corner

Wikimedia Italy has grown up, and it needs a spokesperson: that is, someone who is ready to spam the editorial staff of various media with news on the initiatives of the association and clarifications - especially when something is badly reported - about Wikipedia: we are optimistic, and hope that sooner or later some concepts will be understood. • 10 questions to SIAE, a ironic but detailed rebut to the ten rhetorical questions that SIAE (Italian Authors' and Editors' Guild) has made, buying page advertisements in major Italian newspapers.

News from Biblioteca

We are carrying out a review of the first pages of the work of our comics project, in order to move from an alpha to a beta version.

Senpai started to upload some short biographies of the artists featured on the pages of the project and to upload new material.

News from Musica

Senpai is pursuing the construction of a FAQ on copyleft and - later - the drafting of a guided tour to the release of works under a free license. Anyone willing lend a hand is welcome!

News from wiki@home

Life is made of lucky encounters, where desires coincide. Wikimedia Italy sought and still seeks worthy activities to be financed, Medhi meeting gave us the chance to do something we had never tried before, for which Wiki@Home has been a kind of rehearsal. Medhi went to Tunisia to investigate the social situation after the revolution, and made a photographic report also released under a free license, and explained what he found at our assembly in Bologna. This is the spirit that should permeate wikinews.

News from WMF projects

• Wikiquote: it is a reality, subsidized by the Wikimedia Italy, the program to automatically load the quote of the day and send it via Twitter. Through the RSS feeds, the quotes are also shown on Facebook.
• Wikisource: we are developung a "toolbox" to help proofreaders in the most tedious task. Formatting and proofreading of text proceeds actively, also thanks to the visibility given by the new box in the main page of Wikipedia: the new statistics confirm a very positive trend.

  Calculations

• Wiktionary: the scanning of a dictionary free of copyright continues, in order to extract the lemmata from the entries in the project. The volume has been scanned but there are big problems in the extraction of text. We are currently contacting some specialized companies in order to continue the work.
• Wikipedia: The main project of the WMF has, in recent months, exceeded 800,000 articles in the Italian language.

- I searched for God for long, hard years of meditation... through loneliness, fast, privation... tomorrow I'll start with Wikipedia!
