The Executive Director of Wikimedia Foundation meets Italian speaking wikipedians
The event can't be missed: Lila Tretikov, Executive Director of Wikimedia Foundation, is coming to Milan on February 18th to meet Italian speaking wikipedians and wikimedians. Lila is leading WMF since May 2014 and she already met the wikimedia community (as examples, at Wikimania in London and Wikimedia Conference in Berlin), but this time the goal is to establish a direct and informal connection with the Italian speaking community. The meeting is open to everybody and it is going to be held at the Triennale in Milan, room TriennaleLab of TIM, starting from 4 PM. Given the limited room size, it is better to reserve a spot using this link. We hope to see many of you, it's a great opportunity!

This month the European Paliament will be busy updating the InfoSoc directive (started in 2001), which among other things regulates the copyright in the EU. The European Commission has the ambitious goal of updating this old directive and unify the fragmented european legislation.
Wikimedia Italia has a very clear position, already presented in the previous consultation of the former commission and restated along with dozens of friendly european associations: widen the culture available for everybody thanks to public domain; publish under a free license all the works from public administrations; level out and simplify the rules and exceptions for the ramaining works in all Europe.
Every citizen can help: the best way is to phone the MEPs in your language, espacially those in the JURI, CULT and IMCO commissions. Some of our members already called a dozen of MEPs: and you?
Two guests in the office
In the last two weeks the Wikimedia Italia office if hosting two interns from the Hensemberger technical institute of Monza. Dario and Emily (in the picture) are helping with the office workload, in particular by managing donations, and thanks to their IT and mathematical skills they are of great assistance. The staff, with the help of member Laurentius, is teaching the students about office work and the world of Wikimedia and Wikipedia. The partnership is fruitful for everybody amd we are happy to have accepted the invitation of hosting the interns received from the CSV of Monza e Brianza (Centro di Servizio del Volontariato).
Adesione iniziativa FSFE
Wikimedia Italia sostiene la dichiarazione Verso una "Organizzazione Mondiale della Ricchezza Intellettuale": Supportando la Dichiarazione di Ginevra della Free Software Foundation Europe. Recita il testo: La Dichiarazione di Ginevra è un significativo passo verso la creazione di una larga coalizione di persone, organizzazioni e Paesi che chiedono che la comunità internazionale ripensi gli scopi ed i meccanismi per i quali viene offerto il controllo monopolistico su alcuni tipi di conoscenza. La dichiarazione offre molti soggerimenti costruttivi e concreti per il cambiamento di scopi, politiche e priorità della WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), e fornisce ampi e dettagliati argomenti per ridisegnare gli istituti del diritto d'autore e dei brevetti per un migliore servizio dell'interesse pubblico di tutta l'umanità.
Appuntamenti e comunicazioni
- 13 febbraio: Wikimedia Italia aderisce all'iniziativa M'illumino di meno, promossa dalla tramissione di Radio Due Rai Caterpillar per sensibilizzare sul tema del risparmio energetico. L'associazione, nell'ambito del progetto formativo con i tirocinanti Dario e Emily, ha lavorato alla sistemazione di alcune voci di Wikipedia inerenti al tema. Invitiamo tutti a fare qualche ora di silenzio energetico.
- 26-27 febbraio, Università di Salerno: Susanna Giaccai, su richesta della sezione campana dell'Associazione Italiana Biblioteche, terrà un corso di base su Wikipedia per i bibliotecari dell'Università.
- 2-3 marzo, Firenze: Luca Martinelli e Pierfranco Minsenti tengono il primo corso italiano su Wikidata rivolto agli operatori dei beni culturali: Wikidata. Riuso dati aperti tra Wikipedia e Biblioteche. Il corso è a numero chiuso e l'iscrizione è obbligatoria; per registrarsi bisogna spedire una mail a tos-corsi@tos.aib.it almeno tre giorni prima dell'inizio delle lezioni.
La scorsa settimana sono stati pubblicati online diversi articoli relativi a Wiki Loves Monuments e alla mostra allestita nella sala Tim4Expo della Triennale di Milano (3-8 febbraio), ne riportiamo qui alcuni:
- TIM4Expo, in mostra a Milano le immagini vincitrici di Wiki Loves Monuments su Key4Biz.
- Il concorso fotografico più grande del mondo sbarca a Milano su Touring Club.
- Wiki Loves Monuments, gli scatti vincitori in mostra su SkyTg24.
Novità dal mondo OpenStreetMap
- Con OpenStreetMap e Mapillary è possibile visualizzare le infrastrutture a poche ore dall'apertura: l'ultimo esempio è a Genova.
- Wheelmap, la mappa che trova i luoghi accessibili con la sedia a rotelle, supera i 500 mila contributi.
- La nuova edizione degli OSM Mapping Meetings di Sardinia Open Data raduna i mappatori isolani ogni venerdì sera a Cagliari.
- Meno di due settimane alla conclusione del Mappathon di Piemonte Visual Contest: l'evento conclusivo sarà un mapping party per le strade di Torino (registrazione su EventBrite).
Novità dal mondo Wiki
- A inizio 2015 si è tornati a parlare di Gender Gap (differenza di genere) all'interno di Wikipedia: una ricerca del Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences di Colonia ha infatti rilevato che, sull'enciclopedia, nei profili di donne le parole che fanno riferimento al genere e ai ruoli familiari sono molto più frequenti.
- Sempre a proposito di squilibrio nella rappresentanza di donne e uomini nel mondo di Wikipedia, la contributrice Lightbreather ha lanciato la proposta di creare uno spazio per sole donne nell'enciclopedia, con lo scopo di creare un luogo di supporto e confronto reciproco.
- Vincere un viaggio al quartier generale di Google non è un'esperienza da tutti i giorni. Ad aggiudicarsi questo ambito premio sono i giovanissimi finalisti del Google Code-in contest. Il concorso è rivolto ai programmatori tra i 13 e i 17 anni i quali sono chiamati a superare una serie di sfide informatiche; Wikimedia Foundation fa parte delle dodici organizzazioni che svolgono il ruolo di tutor.
