Activities
Relations with cultural institutions
Libraries
In 2018, WMIT promoted several activities: 9 training courses, 10 seminars and 4 editathons, engaging more than 1000 participants (150 were new editors).
As in past years, WMIT took part in Convegno delle Stelline. Eusebia Parrotto, one of WMIT active members, was one of the speakers in the main session "Comunicare musei, archivi e biblioteche nell'era dei social. Opportunità e strategie di valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale" ("Communicating museums, archives and libraries in social media era. Opportunities and strategies to promote the cultural heritage").
Also the annual conference Sfide e alleanze tra biblioteche e Wikipedia ("Challenges and alliances between libraries and Wikipedia") at the public library Biblioteca nazionale centrale di Firenze was well attended, with around 50 participants. Worth mentioning are also the workshop for PhD students and librarians at Agricultural Department of Università Federico II di Napoli and the training (in remote) for the Montiferru librarians in Sardegna.
In 2018, WMIT renewed the agreement with Università di Torino (digital bibliographic information service of Foreign Languages and Literature and Modern culture Department). The university offered a three months scholarship to promote the literary-humanistic heritage of the Library, using open data platforms, with a special focus on Wikidata and Wikisource.
Museums and archives
WMIT organized many editathons during the year. Among the most successful ones, the editathon at the Archaelogical Park of Paestum, with 13 participants and 8 Wikipedia articles edited.
In the framework of the project "Reach Out", WMIT and the Polo museale of Campania realized some activities with a group of twenty high school students: lessons on Wikipedia and one editathon, to write and edit articles and to upload new photos on Wikimedia Commons of Palazzo Reale.
In occasion of the upcoming 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci (May, 2nd 1519), WMIT signed a convention with Museo Galileo e Leonardo to realize the Progetto Leonardo. The museum will release materials in CC BY-SA, aiming to improve the contents about Leonardo da Vinci and his scientific works on Wikimedia projects, with the collaboration of researchers, experts and the general public.
Together with ICOM, WMIT took part in the round table on opportunities and goals of images free licenses in the context of the web strategy in museums day.
Others
In May WMIT signed an agreement with Sibelius Society aiming to sustain initiatives which promote free dissemination of information, with special attention for music, theatre, art and nordic culture.
In December WMIT signed another agreement with Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa / Centro per la Cooperazione Internazionale of Trento, aiming to realize together some activities in 2019, such as school-work experience, one editathon and one workshop at the class of journalism promoted by Storytelling Lab.
In the framework of Art+Feminism project, the user group WikiDonne promoted 6 editathons in different cities,[1] which involved 90 participants who created 35 new articles on Wikipedia in Italian.

Cultural institutions and release of contents
Libraries
Since 2014, WMIT has been collaborating with BEIC Foundation. A Wikipedian in Residence is in charge of training BEIC’s staff on Wikimedia projects and tools: in particular, in 2018 the training focused on Wikidata. In fact, one of the goals of the collaboration is to put metadata owned by BEIC on Wikidata. At the end of the year 4.900 authors of BEIC’s catalogue had an entity on Wikidata.
Moreover, the WIR continued the job started in 2017 on Acta Eroditorum collection: some of the images already on Wikimedia Commons now illustrates Wikipedia articles, in Italian and in some of the most popular languages.
Up to December 2018, 20.374 images and other media of BEICS were uploaded on Commons. Among these images, the 17.000 photographs by Paolo Monti, digitalised and released in CC BY-SA by BEIC. During the month of December 2018, Wikimedia projects’ pages using the materials released by BEIC were visited over 19 million times.
As regards to Wikisource, over 1.400 books were uploaded on Commons and some of them are already on Wikisource. On March, 8th, BEIC’s staff, supported by the WIR, took part in the editathon promoted by Wikimedia Sweden and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2018, WMIT continued its collaboration with Biblioteca Comunale di Trento, whose project Geografie dal mondo antico brought on Wikimedia Commons 665 maps of XVII and XVIII century and other engravings. The project ended with one editathon on Wikipedia and Wikisource, held by the librarians of the public library of Trento.
Museums and archives
In march 2018 ended Marco Chemello’s residency as a Wikipedian at ICAR. At the end of the collaboration the Institution promoted a wiki-marathon with 15 participants, who created almost 100 new articles and improved other 25.
On March, 21 ICAR threw a final event to present the results of the collaboration with WMIT. In 2018 over 360 articles were edited on Wikipedia in Italian and 289 images were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The 80% of the images are now used in 489 pages on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
On March 2018 as well, Luca Martinelli ended his work as Wikipedian in Residence at ICBSA. Thanks to the collaboration with WMIT, the Institution released 40 sound files and 12 images of disks in CC BY-SA.

Fundraising
The main objective of 2018 was to keep the ‘status quo’, with regards to activities and actions. Due to some staff changes, in 2018 the whole fundraising area had a minor setback.
The total income of membership fees and donations was of 46.462,72 €, +68,46% compared to 2017. This increase is related to the Christmas campaign, which ran between the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018.

Donatori
Nel 2018 abbiamo avuto due campagne di raccolta fondi: a inizio anno la prosecuzione della campagna di natale 2017 su Wiki Loves Monuments, che ha raggiunto per email 22.128 persone con un tasso di apertura del 22%, e una seconda campagna a fine luglio sul progetto OpenStreetMap, che ha raggiunto per email 26.933 con un tasso di apertura del 22%.
Grazie a queste azioni i proventi da donazioni registrano complessivamente una crescita del 92,03% rispetto all'anno precedente, con un totale di 1.807 donazioni per 39.040,64 € di proventi.
Si registrano due donazioni spontanee di 1.000,00 € ciascuna (grandi donatori) e cinque donazioni da middle donors (donatori nell'anno con importo uguale o maggiore di 500 €) che hanno prodotto proventi totali per 4.651,00 €.
Per le attività di fidelizzazione dei donatori, basso è stato il livello dei ringraziamenti inviati attraverso e-mail se confrontato con quello delle quote associative: 1.015 invii che corrispondo al 56,23% di copertura sul totale delle donazioni. Questa bassa percentuale di invii è dovuta alla maggiore difficoltà di acquisire contatti e-mail per i donatori sporadici, rispetto ai soci.
Nel mese di aprile ai donatori del 2017 è stata inviata un'infografica per informarli dei risultati raggiunti e ringraziarli. L'email è stata inviata a 434 contatti, con un tasso di apertura del 38%.
Campagna cinque per mille
Come ogni anno, dal mese di marzo alla fine di luglio è stata realizzata la campagna cinque per mille, che è la principale fonte di entrate per l'associazione. Abbiamo invitato a destinare il cinque per mille a Wikimedia Italia tutti i nostri contatti, sia con comunicazioni specifiche che all'interno della newsletter quindicinale e tramite social network. Abbiamo inoltre informato CAF e commercialisti.
La comunità dei progetti Wikimedia ha contribuito alla diffusione della campagna con appositi annunci, sia limitati alla sola Wikipedia in italiano (per alcune settimane) che allargati a tutti i progetti fratelli coll'assistenza tecnica di Wikimedia Foundation (per 2+2 settimane). Wikimedia Foundation ha anche scritto ai suoi donatori italiani.
Il 31 maggio abbiamo avuto, a titolo gratuito, un'uscita stampa su Internazionale con l'annuncio del nostro cinque per mille (su quattro colonne).
