Access partnership

  • Closed-access, paywalled sources
  • Donation for mutual benefit
  • Vetted, highly-active subject editors
  • etc.

Better strategies: librarian do it better Think like a library

  • Gain access to paywalled sources
  • Facilitate research for editors
  • Community reserach practice
  • Lead readers to free ot local sources
  • Promote open access

Wikipedia, libraries = natual allies Wikipedia is the starting point for reserach We need to explicitly lead readers back to sources at libraries to engage with knowledge

Re-imagine WM Specialists Wikipedian-in-residence Capacity focused, on-staff, wikipedia Meets a specific need---- big commitment Libraries are different Environment-signigicant underfunding More comfortable with discovery support

Wikipedia researcher Wikipedia visiting scholar

  • research affiliate
  • Small investment: create an account and provide a supervisor
  • Fill a similar need to access donation
  • Start institutions thinking GLAM

Wikipedia Interns

  • What if we took the impulse to link-spam Wikipedia and harnessed it?
  • Many of our best GLAM-Wiki contributors, started GLAM-Wiki in student learner roles
  • Student resources are more expandable than staff and... we are good at students (Education Program)

Integrate into the library's process

  • National Archive: Policy encourages Wikipedia editing
  • State Library of New South Wales

Linking archives Structured (and simplified) guidelines for building citations to relevant archivial items, specialist collections, and findind aids

  • Librarians don't frequently think themselves as content creators, but rather discovery enablers

Thikning out loud:

  • What if we invited librarians to work?
  • What if every library Network shared best practice for using Wikipedia? This is happening with Catalan Library Network 100+ libraries; editing information literacy, Wiki-takes activities; reward participation, scale happens because of the network support.
